The famous tech company, Apple, is among the earliest to debut a voice-centric AI assistant in the smartphone industry with Siri in 2011, and it is now looking to develop ChatGPT-style artificial intelligence for the future. As per reports, this is Apple's bid to join in the AI revolution which is happening now, with the rise of chatbots and language models centering on the startup, OpenAI.

It was said that Apple is lagging behind the AI and virtual assistant race, alongside Google and Amazon, as the famous ChatGPT took the world by storm when it was released in the past year.

New York Times' report talked about the different actions and plans of Big Tech companies, including Apple to develop a ChatGPT-style AI to improve its existing technology in smartphones and more.

For Apple, the one that would benefit the most here is Siri, the famed virtual assistant via voice, which saw a significant technological gap compared to the hip and famous ChatGPT.

The Cupertino company reportedly addressed this in its last AI event which was held behind closed doors, one that centered on its developments involving artificial intelligence.

Still, it is yet unknown if Apple would apply this upcoming technology to Siri, as it remains unknown what would be the future of the famous AI assistant from Cupertino.

Siri Got Left in the Dust, Alongside Alexa and Google

Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant were left in the dust with today's emergence of generative AI like ChatGPT.

The New York Times interview with a former Apple engineer, John Burkey, claimed that Siri's code is "clunky" and it would take several weeks to upgrade the system with basic features. This is because engineers needed to tweak the entire system to bring an update.

In an interview by the Financial Times with Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, he claimed that voice assistants are "dumb as rock," speaking from a significant standpoint with its massive investment in AI, OpenAI, and ChatGPT.

Apple's AI Event Speculations

With the significant rise of AI in the market and growing popularity among the masses because of the wonders of ChatGPT's text generation content and intuitive responses, Big Tech is now looking to join in the bigger picture in AI.

As mentioned earlier, Apple held a secret event that invited employees only, held in the company's headquarters in Cupertino. This event was dubbed the "WWDC for AI," and it talked about Apple's development of artificial intelligence which they regarded to be at the "forefront" of the race, with a ChatGPT-competitor allegedly in the works.

This annual AI summit for employees was previously held exclusively for employees only, and it only made its return this year, after COVID restrictions eased down.

It seems like all the pieces in the puzzle for Apple's AI development are coming together, with the latest report centering on Cupertino's upcoming development of a new tech that would up its game in the industry. The Apple engineer claimed that Siri is indeed left behind in technology and features, needing to improve to catch up with the likes of Microsoft, OpenAI, and more.
