The world of portable gaming consoles is expanding in the present, as another renowned contender in the world of handheld devices is allegedly making a comeback, with Sony rumored to be developing one. The new reports center on the "Vita 2," a successor to the famous PS Vita from more than a decade ago, reviving its previous developments.

Sony is best known for being successful in the early to mid-2000s with its PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PS Vita, known rivals to Nintendo's DS, 3DS, and more.

Portable gaming history would not be complete without Sony, and since its dry spell since the PS Vita generation 1, there have been questions about when it would release a successor to it, as the portable gaming consoles are gaining traction now.

According to Insider Gaming's report, rumors are hinting at the development of a new handheld gaming console from the Japanese multi-tech company, referred to as the "Q-Lite" that is under development.

However, as per insider Jeff Grub, this Sony development is allegedly dubbed the "Vita 2," which highly hints at a next-generation PlayStation Vita coming soon.

PS Vita Successor? Revamp with a Modern Catch to Gaming

However, this revamp would not be what one expects from Sony, as previous portable gaming consoles have focused on having exclusive games developed for it, specifically made for the device.

In this version of the next-gen Vita (Vita 2) or Q-Lite, it would port PlayStation 5 games, the catch to its modern gaming experience.

Sony previously allowed PS4 Remote Play on the PS Vita which allowed it to play PlayStation 4 games, and should it be true, it follows the footsteps of the Steam Deck for its ported games from the PC.

The Handheld Gaming Console Industry Now

Handheld gaming consoles may have died down in the mid to late 2010s as they did not appeal much to gamers anymore, or their expectations and experiences wanted more than what was offered to them. While a significant amount of players reverted to consoles or PCs, Nintendo held out for portable gaming, with its iconic Switch.

For the longest time, Nintendo Switch held down the fort for handheld gaming consoles in the market, proving to be an excellent on-the-go gaming device, as well as a tabletop docked experience that can connect to TVs.

Still, its ripe market craved a sweeter fruit, which came with the industry-changing tech from Valve with its release of the Steam Deck in 2021. Valve's handheld console is one of the most famous now, as it ports PC games to the console, redefining the "portable" experience.

With gamers shifting their focus to a portable console that they could bring anywhere but does not limit them to the available games, the industry is looking at more companies debuting their tech, with the latest from ASUS ROG's announcement.

New rumors are now circling back to Sony for the rumors surrounding the next-gen Vita, best known as the Japanese tech maker's last portable console, to have a successor that can compete with the industry giants now.
