Meeting to Discuss AI

The White House will be hosting a meeting with leaders of AI's top companies this Thursday. According to Reuters' report, this aims to discuss the growth of the technology in the country with US Vice President Kamala Harris. Among the invited CEOs are Sundar Pichai of Google, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Dario Amodei of Anthropic.

This meeting will be going through a "frank discussion" with the Chief Executives about artificial intelligence, specifically about its risks as it rapidly develops day by day. President Joe Biden noted through the invasion that companies are expected to make sure that their products are safe before making them available to the public.

Aside from VP Harris, the Thursday meeting will also be attended by the country's top administration officials, including the president's Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, Chief of Staff Deputy Bruce Reed, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard, and Commerce Secretary. Gina Raimondo.

CNBC reported that Anthopic confirmed that the company will be complying with the White House's invasion, while Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft did not confirm or respond on whether their Chief will attend the meeting.

Administration's AI Efforts

The officials plan to tell the CEOs their sole responsibility to mitigate potential harm from tools. Axios reported that this meeting is significant as the rise of generative AI has already reached attention not only in the US but also in the world. The meeting comes as both the industry and the government struggle with the impact of technology on employment, media, and geopolitics.

This is one of the efforts of the Biden administration to seek public comments from developers and companies producing and utilizing AI regarding its accountability measures for its systems, which comes after several concerns that national security and education might be at risk.

Just this week, the administration announced that it will be releasing a public request for information to investigate companies on how they use automated tools to monitor, evaluate, surveil, and manage their workers. Through this process, the White House believes that it can create serious risks to workers despite the technology being beneficial.

It aims to create an economy that supports good-paying jobs where workers will be treated with respect and dignity. By investigating companies, the effects and usage of the technology will be revealed, including the economic, safety, physical, mental, and emotional impacts in the workplace.

The administration's effort is not that surprising, especially since they have made labor issues its centerpiece on implementing economic policies after years of failed wages to keep up with the inflation.
