The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, recently acknowledged that the Xbox Series X console lags behind its rivals, the PS5 and the Nintendo Switch, TechRadar reports.

Spencer stated in a recent interview that they are not in the business of "out-consoling Sony or Nintendo" and that there is no way for them to achieve this.

Even though the Xbox Series X is a highly regarded console, it has not sold as well as its competitors.

Xbox Generational Support Remains Unmatched: Spencer

In the same interview, Spencer stands by his statement and argues that the biggest strength of the Xbox lies in having generational support in a way the competition cannot match.

One area where the Xbox brand has succeeded is with the Xbox Game Pass, which offers the best deal for those wanting access to the best Xbox Series X games for a low monthly price, he added.

Worrying Numbers for Xbox

As of March 2023, VGChartz tells us that the Xbox Series X has sold nearly 21 million units globally. Meanwhile, the PS5 has sold almost double that figure, with Sony's latest earnings report stating that they have sold nearly 40 million consoles

These two systems were launched in November 2020 and are now widely available in many countries, with shortages and the need for restocking being a thing of the past.

When it comes to the Nintendo Switch, it is not entirely fair to compare sales records, as it has been available since 2017 and caters to the handheld console market.

According to Nintendo's February 7 earnings report, the Nintendo Switch has sold an impressive 122.5 million units, placing it as the third best-selling video game console of all time, behind only the PS2 and the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo Switch has sold 100 million more units than the Xbox Series X.

Something to Look Forward To

Although it may be disappointing for Xbox fans to hear, it is crucial to remember that sales are not the only factor that matters.

Xbox has been working hard to create a vast ecosystem and investing in its platform. They have been coming out with awesome games and offering cost-effective gaming services such as Xbox Game Pass, which has been a game-changer for the industry.

"We lost the biggest console generation there is to lose, so when we build on Xbox, we want it to feel awesome. So if we focused on great games, that doesn't mean we'll win the console race," Phil Spencer said in the interview.

Next month, the platform will air the Xbox Games Showcase, revealing new surprises from titles and studios.

Even though they are in third place, Xbox has been boosting its brand and enhancing the gaming experience for those who play on its platform.
