Spotify is reportedly working on a new feature called "Your Offline Mix" that aims to improve offline listening when users have limited or no internet access.

This feature would automatically create a playlist consisting of recently played songs, allowing users to enjoy their favorite tracks even when they're unable to connect to the internet.

On Twitter, Spotify boss Daniel Ek shared a screenshot of the playlist, which appears to be around three and a half hours long. While no specific timeline has been given for the broader rollout of this feature, Ek's public tweet suggests that it may not be too far off.

Spotify Plans to Launch Its Own Take on Smart Downloads

As per Android Police, Spotify is currently offering the option to download playlists and albums for offline listening, which is particularly useful when conserving data or when internet access is unavailable, such as during flights or commutes.

However, manually selecting and downloading music can be a tedious task, especially for those who enjoy switching between various genres and artists.

YouTube Music Offline Mixtape

Interestingly, YouTube Music has had a similar feature called "Offline Mixtape" for quite some time, per The Verge. Evidence discovered in mid-2020 by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong indicates that Spotify has been working on its offline mix feature for a while.

The reasons for the delay in its release are unclear, but it's possible that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly reduced outdoor activities and travel, may have shifted the priorities of Spotify's development efforts.

With the competition brewing in the music streaming industry, it's a natural instinct for the company to embrace again some features that have already left an impact on the customers. This way, they will be reminded about its presence in a brand new setting.

While we anticipate the release of "Your Offline Mix," we highly suggest that those who are struggling to choose playlists for offline listening is to download the "Your Top Songs" playlist generated by Spotify last year.

Although it may not include your most recent music preferences, it can serve as a good starting point when you find yourself in a situation with limited internet connectivity.

Spotify Layoff and Podcast Show Shutdown

In another report by Digiday, which is still about Spotify, the Swedish audio streaming platform became the latest tech firm to lay off its staff. About 20% of its current workforce, or 200 employees, are expected to leave the company soon.

The decision came following the Gimlet-Parcast podcast merger. Because of this, five shows will be bidding goodbye on the platform, including "Disappearances," "Solved Murders," "Unexplained Mysteries," "Cold Cases," "Unsolved Murders," and "Conviction."

Earlier this year, Spotify also axed 6% of its staff as part of its plan to expand profitability in the podcast division.
