Fable, a San Francisco-based startup, has unveiled its Showrunner AI technology, called SHOW-1, which is capable of creating new episodes of TV shows with the user as the star.

According to GamesBeat, this advancement in generative AI comes amid an ongoing writers' and actors' strike in Hollywood.

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 04: Matt Parker and Trey Stone (R) introduce the game South Park: The Stick of Truth during the Microsoft Xbox press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo at the Galen Center on June 4, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. Thousands are expected to attend the annual three-day convention to see the latest games and announcements from the gaming industry.

Showrunner AI

The AI Showrunner Agents developed by Fable can handle the entire TV show production process, from writing and directing to casting, editing, voicing, and animating.

Fable CEO Edward Saatchi told GamesBeat that the AI Showrunner can generate full episodes of "South Park," including animation and dialogue, based on user inputs or prompts.

In their research paper, Fable outlines their approach, leveraging large language models (LLMs) and state-of-the-art diffusion models. By incorporating a multi-agent simulation for contextualization, story progression, and behavioral control, the AI can generate high-quality episodic content for existing intellectual properties (IPs).

The simulation utilizes various data points, such as character histories, emotions, and goals, to create coherent and aligned scenes and image assets within the IP's story world. This context allows users to evaluate the generated story effectively.

Notably, the simulation adds an element of uncertainty through "happy-accidents," introducing unexpected creative side-effects like hallucinations that positively influence the story's outcome.

Generative AI Tools' Slot Machine Effect

According to the startup's research paper, one crucial challenge in generative AI tools is the "Slot Machine Effect," where content generation can feel random and lack a deliberate creative process.

Current systems often produce outputs instantaneously, leading to immediate gratification but hindering long-term creative goals. Fable's approach aims to sustain a multi-step creative process over time, mitigating the negative effects of the Slot Machine Effect.

By providing users with more control and variability in the creative evaluation process, Fable's Showrunner AI technology fosters a more engaging and rewarding experience for users to participate in the production of TV show episodes. As generative AI continues to advance, it opens up new possibilities for immersive and interactive storytelling experiences.

The timing of the advancement in generative AI, specifically Fable's Showrunner technology, is noteworthy as it coincides with an ongoing writers' and actors' strike in Hollywood.

The strike, involving members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), has caused disruptions in the entertainment industry, leading to delays in production schedules and affecting the release of new content.

The SAG-AFTRA's list of demands comprised essential requests, such as overall wage raises, safeguards against actor images being exploited via artificial intelligence, increased compensation for successful streaming shows, and health and retirement benefits enhancements.
