A new surprise is coming from Mazda. A next-generation MX-5 Miata is coming out but is turning over to the clean, alternative side as it debuts an electric vehicle.

The beloved Miata from the Japanese car manufacturer is now seeing a reform for the future, and according to reports, the next release of this beloved roadster is swapping out its gas-powered engine.

The Miata has always been a household name in the world of cars, particularly for the Japanese domestic market (JDM), as it proved to be a reliable workhorse that is efficient and easy to modify.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Is Transforming as an Electric Vehicle

Motortrends reported that Mazda is looking to transform the MX-5 Miata into a clean energy car, and it would soon swap out its internal combustion engine for an all-electric layout in the future.

Mazda's plans targeted a 2030 electrification shift, where all its models will only use clean energy. That being said, the MX-5 Miata would come in early, and according to reports, the next-generation Miata, a.k.a. its fifth generation, would be released by 2025.

Not only will this deliver upgraded looks and features for the Miata, but it will also change various elements of the car, incorporating EV batteries that will make the low-mass car have a better low center of gravity.

Next Miata on the Market Will Feature an E-Motor

According to Ars Technica, the next-gen MX-5 Miata, which is still unknown if it would be called the NE, would swap its ICE for an electric motor to power the vehicle.

What Mazda is planning for the Miata's electrified version remains unknown, especially if it would retain its rear-wheel drive version or have an all-wheel drive variant present in most EVs.

Mazda's Miata: A True JDM Legend

If you wonder how people in Tokyo reacted after first seeing the Miata during its early 1989 release, it was good, as Mazda's famed MX-5, which came to be known as the NA generation, brought significant triumphs for the company.

It was immediately offered to the global market, including the US, and brought its happy front fascia for everyone to enjoy. With its legacy throughout the years, the modern MX-5 Miatas still carried its iconic front engine and rear-wheel drive layout but now offers a hardtop or soft top for the iconic convertible, initially refreshed in 2016.

Mazda is known for carrying the MX-5 Miata's name for long periods, particularly with the vehicle's NA and ND versions. In 2019, the 2-seater speedster pushed out an upgrade that brought greater power and speed to the already agile car.

The Japanese company still offers the Miata now, and these may be the last ICE-powered roadsters available under the iconic make. If the reports are accurate, the next release of the MX-5 Miata in 2025 will bring an electric version of the roadster, losing its iconic inline-4 engine, which transformed from 1.6L to 1.8L, and finally, the last's 2.0L.
