Jerome Pesenti, the former Vice President of AI at Meta, has unveiled Sizzle, a free AI-powered learning app designed to provide step-by-step solutions to math equations and word problems.

According to TechCrunch, the platform, which recently introduced several new features, including a grading function and the ability to regenerate steps, distinguishes itself by not only offering solutions but also acting as a tutor chatbot, guiding students through the problem-solving process.

Sizzle: Math-Solving AI-Powered App

Sizzle, similar to math-solving tools like Photomath and Symbolab, stands out by extending its capabilities to word problems in physics, chemistry, and biology. It caters to various educational levels, from middle and high school to advanced placement (AP) and college.

Pesenti emphasized that the aim behind Sizzle was to utilize AI to assist students, irrespective of their educational background or available resources. Unlike some AI-powered learning apps, which may be used for quick answers without comprehension, Sizzle seeks to enhance understanding by functioning as an interactive tutor.

Leveraging substantial language models from third-party sources such as OpenAI, combined with proprietary in-house models, Sizzle achieves an impressive accuracy rate of 90 percent.

Inspiration for Creating Sizzle

Pesenti told TechCrunch: "After leaving Meta, I was inspired to leverage AI to truly help students and non-students no matter what kind of background they come from, the school they attend, or how many resources they have."

He added: "I felt that applications of AI haven't had a clear positive impact on people's lives. Using it to transform learning is an opportunity to change that."

The latest feature, "Grade Your Homework," enables users to upload a photo of their completed assignments for specific feedback on each solution. If a mistake is made, Sizzle offers guidance for correction.

Another feature, "Try a Different Approach," empowers users to propose an alternative problem-solving method personalized to their understanding. Users have the ability to offer a concise explanation of their favored method, prompting the AI to produce a fresh, detailed solution.

The "Give Me Choices" feature supplies various responses, proving advantageous for exam readiness. Furthermore, the "Answer with a Photo" capability lets users directly import images from their device's photo library, enhancing the app's adaptability.

With a team comprising professionals from Meta, Google, X (formerly Twitter), and Twitch, Sizzle has garnered over 20,000 downloads since its August launch, earning an average rating of 4.6 stars on both the App Store and Google Play.

Sizzle's future plans include introducing premium features and in-app purchases while maintaining free access to the core step-by-step problem-solving functionality.

The platform recently acquired $7.5 million in seed funding, led by Owl Ventures, with 8VC and FrenchFounders also participating in the investment round. These funds will be allocated towards enlarging the team and advancing product development, with plans to introduce more features in the upcoming months.
