After many rumors suggesting Sony would unveil its VR headset at the Game Developers Conference, that's what the company did, and what the Japanese giant has in-store for gamers looks very promising.

The name for Sony's VR headset is called Morpheus, but that is no means the final name. What it will be called when the device is released into the hands of consumers is not yet known. However, we're inclined to believe it will be called PlayStation something, to bring inline with the PlayStation family of devices.

The design of Morpheus is similar to the Oculus Rift, but smaller in size and has a slicker look. No surprises here since Sony is well known for great product designs, even if the company goes overboard now and again.

We understand the device is being designed by an international team of skilled Sony engineers, so the outcome should be quite decent.

What to expect from this technology

When gamers finally get their hands on Morpheus, they will come to realize that the device supports 1080p resolution, which is something gamers have come to expect from everything PlayStation related these days. The device will work in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye, and the PlayStation Move for deep gaming integration with both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 3.

According to Sony, the team behind Morpheus has identified six main areas for VR work. Those areas are Sight, Sound, Tracking, Control, Ease of Use, and Content.

It is understood that there's a special version of the video game, Thief, that supports Sony's VR headset. We're not sure if this special version of the game will be showed off at GDC or at another event.

Sony also said Morpheus is designed to be comfortable, and doesn't place weight on the cheek or nose. In addition, Morpheus in its current form requires a 5-meter cord to work, but Sony is doing its best to make it wireless for the final version.

For those who believe Sony's VR headset is all about gaming, think again. The Japanese giant has a lot of plans for other entertainment related areas, but the company did not get too much into the details of what we should expect.

When will Sony launch Morpheus? We're not sure, but our bet is either late 2014, or some time in 2015.
