In an interview OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei during the Google I/O developers conference, Android news website Ausdroid found out that the next smartphone of the company will not be launching on June 1.

Pei first confirmed that the smartphone will be named the OnePlus 2, with the number instead of the word "two."

After clarifying the device's name, Pei then revealed that the smartphone will be launching in this year's third quarter. He did not specify if the launch date would be nearer to the start of the third quarter or the end of it, only stating that the OnePlus 2 would be launched sometime in the quarter.

There were expectations that the OnePlus 2 would be launched on June 1 due to a teaser image that the company tweeted. The image was that of the OnePlus One device that was half erased, with a pencil and an eraser beside it. Accompanying the image were the words "Time to change."

In an additional caption for the image, OnePlus said that it is currently looking for ways for the company to shake up the tech industry, and that June 1 was the date where the "change" is supposed to happen.

Pei said that the teaser is not referring to a new device, putting an end to rumors that the June 1 announcement will be regarding the OnePlus 2.

In the interview with Ausdroid, Pei also discussed the company's invite system, which has been the subject of controversy especially by the fans of the OnePlus One device.

The invite system allowed OnePlus to have a better control over the sales and the inventory of the OnePlus One, which the company did because they were not sure on how many people would buy the first smartphone that they launched.

OnePlus is bringing back the invite system for users looking to purchase a OnePlus 2 smartphone, with Pei stating that there will be more invites to be released so that more users will be able to get their hands on the device.

Pei added that the company is concerned whether the OnePlus 2 will be able to replicate the success of the OnePlus One. OnePlus expected to sell between 50,000 to 100,000 units of the OnePlus One, but the smartphone blew away expectations and sold almost 1 million units.

Pei added that the company will still have a low-budget marketing strategy for the OnePlus 2, falling in line with the company's direction of passing on savings to their customers instead of spending significant money on advertising efforts.
