Sorry Android users — the rumors are not true. After reports surfaced on Monday that Nintendo's next-generation console could run on the Android operating system, the Japanese company has officially denied the claims.

"There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX," a Nintendo spokesman told the Wall Street Journal.

Thus far, little is known about the new console, expect the fact that Nintendo has codenamed it NX, and that it will launch in 2016.

But the Japanese newspaper Nikkei stirred up the rumor mill yesterday, after reporting that a source revealed that Nintendo NX will use Google's open source platform.

Nintendo quickly shot down these rumors – for now – but did confirm that it was looking into the operating system since it would help developers to create content that could also run on smartphones and tablets.

According to the false reports, Nintendo's choice to use Android OS was based on wanting to have more third-party games supported on the machine — something that could not be achieved with the Wii U. Nintendo's current hardware uses the company's own operating system.

Even though Nikkei's source claimed that the NX was "loaded with Android," if Nintendo were to use it, it would be based on Android OS, not the same software that is on our phones and tablets.

While Nintendo denied the rumor, there is a possibility that they are just holding off the news until they decide to announce it themselves. Still, Nikkei has a bad track record. The paper previously reported that Nintendo was rolling out promotional mini games and trailers on smartphones, but the Japanese company shot those rumors down.

The paper also reported in 2010 that a larger 3DS was coming, and although Nintendo denied these claims, it did announce the 3DS XL months later.

Nintendo is expected to reveal more details about its top secret console next year.
