Korean electronic company LG is known for its wide variety of products from TVs and smartphones to home appliances. But now LG Electronics is entering the laptop market for the first time in the U.S. with its high-end gram series of laptops that hit Microsoft Stores on Monday.

"LG has a long history of developing innovative consumer electronics products and has applied that expertise, along with its laptop success in other markets, to the LG gram series in the U.S.," David VanderWaal, LG Electronics USA's VP of marketing, said in a press release. "We recognize this is an extremely competitive category, and are confident consumers will respond well to this product that combines powerful performance with lightweight design."

There are three models that make up the LG gram series, including the lightweight LG gram 14, which weighs in at 2.16 pounds, making it lighter than Apple's 11-inch MacBook Air. The body of the 14-inch laptop (and the 13-inch option) is made from carbon-lithium and carbon-magnesium, the same material used in spacecrafts, to ensure its durability. The laptop is a half-inch thick, so it's slim enough to take with the consumer on-the-go.

The gram series laptops are all Microsoft Edition laptops that run on the new Windows 10 that includes Cortana and Microsoft Edge for increased productivity. The laptops are equipped with a virus-protected system and are free of installed junkware.

The gram series of laptops include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology and ports for USB 3.0, as well as a micro USB and microSD slot. The laptops also have an HDMI port built in, which is uncommon for portable computers of this size.

The LG gram series offers full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution and a 16:9 ratio, along with LG's In-Plane Switching technology that adjusts color saturation and contrast. The laptops come with a built-in Digital-to-Analog converter for hi-fi quality sound.

There is also a "Reader Mode" with reduced blue light to protect eyes during longer periods of use, and the gram series has a battery life up to 7.5 hours.

The LG gram 13-inch model comes in white with Intel Core i5, 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage and retails for $899. The LG gram 14-inch model comes in gold with Intel Core i5, 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage and retails for $999. The LG gram 14 is also available with Intel Core i7, with 8 GB of memory and 265 GB of storage and retails for $1399.
