PlayStation 4 update 2.0 delays 'Evolve' alpha, causes problems in rest mode

Sony rolled out the PlayStation 4's 2.0 firmware update earlier this week. While it brought a number of usability improvements, themes and the new share play feature, some users are experiencing a number of issues.

Some users are reporting problems connecting to YouTube, but a more serious issue is the console's new "rest" mode feature. This puts the PS4 in a low power state that can be used for downloads or charging controllers. Unfortunately, a number of users are reporting that after being in rest mode, their PS4 will fail to reboot, essentially making the console unusable.

Sony says they are aware of the issues and will provide an update when new information is available. That was two days ago, and so far no solution has been found.

Even worse, those issues are spilling over into the game development world as well -- due to the update, the early access "Big Alpha" for the cooperative shooter Evolve, happening this weekend, has been delayed on Sony's console.

The alpha is still ongoing this weekend for Xbox One and PC players, and more alpha invites will be rolling out to make up for the lack of PlayStation users participating. PC users who own the game X-Com: Enemy Unknown on Steam will automatically be granted access to the alpha. Evolve publisher 2K issued the following statement on the matter:

"2K, Turtle Rock Studios and PlayStation continue to work hard to resolve the difficulties affecting the Evolve Big Alpha on PlayStation 4," the publisher writes. "Evolve's closed alpha test is still playable on Xbox One and PC. We thank our PS4 users for their continued patience. More information will be provided at the Evolve website, Twitter and Facebook pages as it becomes available."

2K will likely look at hosting a PS4 exclusive alpha on another weekend in the future once problems have resolved in order to make up for lost time, though nothing is confirmed. A beta for the game will be coming in January. The full retail version of Evolve launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on Feb. 10.
