Brothers Darin and Glen Morgan are back with creator Chris Carter and lead actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson for the 2016 showing of "The X-Files" but that doesn't mean fans can call the six new episodes a "The X-Files" reboot. At least Carter said that a reboot is not what he wanted when they brought the willing and available cast and crew together again.

The stories are all new with just some nods to old episodes and "The X-Files" mythology it shaped during the original run. Out of the six new episodes, the first and last are connected while the four in between are basically stand-alone episodes with their own arcs.

"A reboot wasn't the way I wanted to go ... I wanted fresh, new material and that's what we've done," Carter said in an interview when asked whether the six-episode series could be considered a reboot.

Several original cast and crew expressed their interest to return but due to busy schedules and new work, only the Morgan brothers were able to return to writing for the new "The X-Files."

"I guess we were the only losers who didn't have anything else to do" Glen Morgan said jokingly.

As for the other Morgan brother, he had a personal reason for his return. "The executives left us alone, and we only have ourselves to blame if no one likes it... I always had a story that I wanted to tell ... and The X-Files is the only place that you can tell that story" Darin answered.

Carter said that he began to hire people to work in the series as soon as the negotiations ended and that he aimed to get the original cast and crew back, however, not everyone could fit the show in their schedules so they had to hire new people. "It was good fortune we were able to hire the people we were," Carter said of his new cast and crew.

He also noted that there is a possibility to expand the episode count, however, that will be decided by Duchovny and Anderson's availability since they are the lead stars of the show.

"The X-Files" returns on FOX on Jan. 24, 2016.
