Nathan Darrow is trading the cut-throat world of politics in Washington, D.C. to become part of the criminal underworld in Gotham City.

The "House of Cards" alum was cast in the recurring role of Mr. Freeze for the second season of "Gotham." But before he became a villain, Mr. Freeze was Victor Fries, one of Gotham's top cryogenics engineers. As a scientist, Fries was highly brilliant, but he struggled to connect meaningfully with others, except with Nora, his wife.

Unfortunately, a terminal disease has befallen Nora, prompting Fries to go to extreme lengths to figure out how he can freeze his wife's body before she dies. The measures he goes through leads to his transformation into Mr. Freeze, one of DC's legendary villains.

Before Darrow, Arnold Schwarzenegger was the face of Mr. Freeze, playing the part in "Batman & Robin," which came out in 1997. Before him, George Sanders took on the role for the 1960s TV series.

Darrow is best known for playing Edward Meechum, Frank Underwood's bodyguard and secret lover in "House of Cards," an original Netflix series. Aside from being Mr. Freeze, he can also be seen with Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro in the TV movie "Wizard of Lies", as well as in "Billions," a new TV show, alongside Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti in a recurring role. He's also cast in "Stranger in the House," "In the Studio" and "Ambition's Debt."

His previous works include: "Ambrose Bierce: Civil War Stories," "Rigged," "Fantastic Magnifico" and "Blue Bloods."

Cameron Monaghan's Jerome Valeska was one of the most memorable characters from season 1 of Gotham and will continue to influence the story in season 2, believed to be a precursor to the Joker's introduction. Mistah J might not be making an appearance yet but having a character like Mr. Freeze will certainly do a lot to make Gotham more exciting. Not that the TV show needs any help with that.

Season 2 of Gotham started airing Sept. 21. Darrow is set to appear on episode 11, which is set to show on Nov. 30.
