There's only a teaser trailer for Outlast 2 for now, along with some eerie words to accompany it. The sequel to the multiplatform horror game will test player's faith, says developer Red Barrels.

Red Barrels is still hard at work on Outlast 2 and has just released a trailer for the game, but Outlast 2 won't arrive until the fall of next year.

"No conflict is ever black and white. But once the dust has settled, the victors get to decide who was right and who was wrong. Who is good and who is evil," says Philippe Morin, Red Barrel's cofounder.

People can find themselves in violent and depraved situations, pushed there by human nature. Such acts are then often justified by revelations from the divine and a promise of paradise to come.

"Horror rises from desperation and blind faith," Morin adds. "Outlast 2 will test your faith, pushing players to a place where going mad is the only sane thing to do."

Released in 2013, the first Outlast was held as many gamers as a breath of fresh air as the horror genre had become relegated to a series of lo-fi jump scares -- open a door or turn a corner, and there's a ghoul or some other horror springing out a like jack-in-a box.

Outlast earned a Metacritic score of 80 out of 100, and that was in line with where many of the other critics rated the game.

What brought the game down was jump scares. There was fear of the overpowered enemies in the game, but the fear dissipated after encountering the hard-to-beat baddies several times before progressing, according to a GameSpot review (7/10) written by Carolyn Petit.

"In the end, though, Outlast's few weak moments are overshadowed by the effectiveness with which it so often gets inside your head and scares the hell out of you," writes Petit. "You sometimes end up feeling like you're just going through the motions the game requires you to go through, but when the ride is as well designed as this, the best thing to do is just get in and hold on tight."
