Microsoft has pulled the Windows RT 8.1 update following the Blues Screen of Death (BSOD) issue reported by Surface RT users. Users who are looking to upgrade their Windows RT 8 to Windows RT 8.1 will now have to wait a little longer.

On Saturday, October 18, Microsoft pulled the update from the Windows Store. The company has made no official announcement pertaining to what's causing the issue and by when a fix will be rolled out.

A Microsoft program manager announced via the community forum that the company was "investigating" the BSOD issue, which was bricking users' devices.

"Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1," wrote a Microsoft program manager on the community forum. "As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience. We will provide updates as they become available."

Per reports, when some users had finished upgrading their Surface RT to Windows RT 8.1, they noticed the BSOD error message "Your PC needs to be repaired. The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information."

With the boot configuration data corrupted, the devices got bricked and were rendered inoperable.

Irate users have taken to the support forum to express their discontent at Microsoft not informing them of the removal of the update.

"It sure would have been nice if the store would have told me this instead of me spending hours trying to 'troubleshoot my problem,'" wrote jmwallace77 on the support forum. "I have even spent hours to get to this buried message explaining [that] Windows RT 8.1 is being delayed."

Mashable editor-in-chief Lance Ulanoff also tweeted how his device got bricked by the update.

The Microsoft representative has disclosed that engineers are working to resolve the BSOD issue, but did not provide a time frame by when the issue will be addressed.
