Google Fit has matured into a more insightful, more capable activity tracking app. That growth includes real-time stats on running, strength coaching and sleep monitoring.

It's just in time for the holidays, says Google of the latest update for Google Fit.

"When you're able to view your overall fitness, you may just start making better choices: taking the stairs instead of the elevator, choosing salads over eclairs," Google's software engineer Michael Gaiman says.

Google Fit was already able to track a user's walks, runs, bike rides and calories using only the sensors inside a smartphone. A dedicated fitness tracker is, of course, a lot more accurate.

The fitness app uses GPS data to improve its accuracy in tracking a user's footsteps. And with the latest update, it'll rely more on that data to provide a more insightful experience for its users.

Now Google Fit will provide real-time stats on those activity sessions. The fitness app will now detail pace, route, speed and elevation for users to stay on track and keep themselves motivated.

For those who rock Android Wear bling, Google Fit can record stationary activities. It'll track pushups, situps, squats and probably lunges and rows.

Google Fit is also becoming more of a socialite, expanding its circle of associates to popular sleep and nutrition apps and other devices that record such things.

The updated app can also compile sleep data from apps and hardware that include the Sleep as Android, Basis Peak, Sony Smartband 2 and Xiaomi's Mi Band and Mi Band 1s.

The more social Google Fit can also leverage diet data from Fatsecret, MyFitnessPal, Loseit and Lifesum.

Google further says that the new integrations, which will be available very soon, will allow users to understand their health even better.

"And with Google Fit, you'll always have a personal coach cheering you on, right from your phone," Google adds.

To get the fitness tracking app, head over to Google Play Store and hit Install.
