Those looking to catch episodes of Downtown Abbey between Halo 4 deathmatches will appreciate America's Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) launching an app for Xbox 360.

Available to Xbox Live Gold members, the app features both new and archive full-length episodes of both local and national programs from PBS including NOVA, American Experience, and Secrets of the Dead among others. Missing from the announced shows is one of the network's longest running shows Sesame Street.

Local and web-specific content from PBS will also be available. PBS app was developed in conjunction with London-based design firm DigitalFlare.

The move is in line with Microsoft's long attempt to make its gaming console a platform for activities more than gaming. Vice President of Product Development for PBS Digital Jon Brendsel saw the app as integral for the network to have further reach.

"This launch is an important next step in our strategy to make PBS content available through a variety of platforms, while maintaining the connection between the viewer and their local PBS station," Brendsel said. "While PBS member stations will always be the first place to find high-quality PBS programming, the launch of our Xbox 360 offering recognizes that viewers are looking to engage with their local station in the time and manner they choose."

Video streaming services Netflix, Hulu and The CW all have their own dedicated apps. Adding PBS into the fold made sense, according to Microsoft's General Manager of Interactive Entertainment Business, Kathy Styponias.

"PBS is a great addition to our expansive lineup of entertainment experiences on Xbox 360," said Styponias. "The addition of PBS is another example of how we're continuing to expand our catalog of entertainment so that Xbox Live members can find all of their favorite experiences in one place."

Microsoft's next-gen Xbox One is set for release at the end of next month and can connect with user's cable or satellite providers set through an HDMI in slot. This will allow users to switch between using the console and watching television through button or voice prompts.
