Surf's up ... even if you're in calm waters?

On Friday, world champion surfer Kelly Slater took to his Instagram account to show off a man-made wave in what he called a "freak of technology."

"For nearly ten years, my team and I have been working on creating the first truly world-class, high-performance, human-made waves," Slater wrote. "This is something I dreamt about as a kid. Through rigorous science and technology, we've been able to design and build what some said was impossible, and many very understandably never thought would actually happen."

He added of the test ride: "It was an insane day. I'm still a little in disbelief, and trying to process how much fun this wave is, but it certainly feels like this is going to change a lot of perceptions about human-made waves."

According to Huffington Post, the wave-generating technology is being tested in a "secret spot" about 110 miles from an undisclosed coast.

If this Kelly Slater Wave Company prototype ever makes it to the market, it could help breathe life into surfing and boost its popularity in geographic locations that have the ocean or rivers at their disposal, but not the kinds of waves regularly needed for the sport.

There isn't a better name to put behind the possible impending product than Slater, who has seen and done it all when it comes to riding waves.
