Apple has updated its mobile version of GarageBand, offering a number of new features, including 3D Touch support and Beat Machine-style loops.

Arguably the biggest new feature in the app is that it now offers a new and comprehensive virtual drum machine through a grid of pads that can be tapped to trigger samples or loops. Previously, the app offered ways to trigger drum sounds, but they were limited and the interface was often difficult to easily navigate.

Of course, that feature is present in plenty of other music programs, as well as in hardware form from companies like Roland. Despite this, the fact that Apple is offering it for free through GarageBand is a pretty significant step.

The new app doesn't only allow users to keep things in rhythm, but also in tune. It is able to draw from a library of EDM, dubstep, hip-hop and rock, and more samples can be created and loaded into the library by the user.

The app also now offers a drummer feature, which is basically a set of virtual drummers that can play either acoustic or electronic sounds. Bass players will also enjoy a larger selection of virtual amplifiers.

Critics of GarageBand will suggest the app is mainly for amateurs, and while that might be true, it is becoming increasingly professional due to now offering a number of automation features and controls as well as a revamped EQ.

GarageBand 2.1 is available as a free download from the App Store and requires iOS 9 or later.
