Xena the Warrior Princess seems to be doing her iconic war cry a lot lately because, not only is NBC in the process of reviving the television show, Dynamite Comics has also announced that it will be releasing new "Xena" comic books. iO9 just shared its exclusive first look at a few of the artwork from the first issue.

Genevieve Valentine, who previously wrote for the "Catwoman" comic book series, is in charge of penning the new "Xena" series and, unlike NBC that wants to change Xena, Valentine is bringing her and partner Gabrielle back to face new adventures instead. Ariel Mendel will provide the illustration for Valentine's story.

So what's in store for us in the new "Xena: Warrior Princess" comic book series?

Valentine will be taking fans 25 years after the "Twilight of the Gods" arc in the television show. Both Xena and Gabrielle will make a comeback in the world only to find a formidable Roman Empire headed by Caesar steadily rising and getting stronger. It's not about to stop there, though, because Caesar is preparing to set out and expand his empire further.

The story seems really promising and with Valentine in charge of the story, we know it's going to be great. After all, she brilliantly wrote a complex character for Selina Kyle during her time writing "Catwoman."

"Valentine and Brown gave Selina Kyle a necessary break from being Catwoman to put the spotlight on her as a character - and in the process, write a pretty gripping crime drama," a review of the "Catwoman" series Valentine penned said.

That's why we think having Valentine on board for the new "Xena" comics is an exciting step. After all, Xena and Gabrielle are already complex characters who went through a complex life and, if there's anyone who could work with that and take it a step further at this point in time, Valentine is a very good candidate. No pressure.

The first issue of the new "Xena: Warrior Princess" will hit shelves in April.
