Battlefield 5 is coming later this year, but EA has yet to officially provide any details on the next installment in its long-running military shooter franchise. That, of course, leaves it up to the masses to wildly speculate about what new features and settings will be included in the upcoming game.

Take this latest rumor with a grain of salt, but if a Swiss retailer is to be believed, Battlefield 5 might be ditching its modern military setting for something a little more old school in the form of World War I.

The listing is from World of Games, and specifically features the translated description (according to NeoGAF) of "Multiplayer tactical shooter in WW1." The product page features placeholder box art featuring what appears to be Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid and states Battlefield 5 will be releasing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It's worth noting that the World War I part of the product description has since been removed from the website but lives on in screen caps.

If nothing else, the release platforms are bound to be true, considering Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline each released on the same three platforms.

As for the World War I setting? It's hard to believe, but it wouldn't be completely out of left field. Battlefield began as a World War II shooter, but going back to the first World War would definitely be unique for the franchise. Few games have explored the era of trench warfare, after all. It's also worth noting that World War I was the first war to use tanks and machine gun weaponry, which could make for an interesting game setting not often explored.

Whether or not Battlefield 5 will be ditching the modern setting of the three numbered entries in the franchise remains to be seen. We'll no doubt learn more official details about the game from EA at E3 this summer. Battlefield 4 released in Oct. of 2013, followed by the release of the cops and robbers spin-off Battlefield Hardline in March 2015. EA says Battlefield will not be an annual franchise like its primary competitor Call of Duty.
