For those who have opted for Valve, which promises no cake, the beta version of the game client just received a major update that primarily addresses the Steam Controller.

Likely the most interesting improvement released in the update for the beta client is the ability to create their own action sets for the Steam Controller. That, and the ability to save those custom action sets, name them and delete them.

So now, users can customize the controller's mode shifts and specify what triggers them. Valve has also added support for legacy games so that users can specify action set shifts for them as well.

The updates for SteamVR may not be as exciting, but make for a more streamlined experience. For one, the VR keyboard's URL entry for Big Picture mode has been fixed.

SteamVR has been given a place in the jump list options and the SteamVR tool has been giving a link inside of Library view. SteamVR will auto-launch after it has finished updating and Valve has improved the scroll function for touch pads when the head-mounted display is active.

Also in the update is an improvement to Big Picture. Emoticons now show up when Steam runs in big screen mode.

Here's a rundown of what else the update brought for the Steam Controller:

  • Added New Controller Action binding types which will expand in the future with bindings that are not specific to the game, but rather higher level.
  • Added "Change Action Set" Binding
  • Added Show Keyboard Binding to display keyboard on screen
  • Added "Take Screenshot" Binding
  • Removed hard coded desktop keyboard shortcut (stick click) and replaced it with controller action binding in the default desktop configuration.
  • Fixed some cases of non-steam games not applying controller settings. Ensure that "Allow Launchers" option is off for this to take effect.
  • Fixed controllers not turning off on Suspend power mode in Desktop mode which could cause zombie controllers to be seen over wireless
  • Fixed Horizontal Invert setting not working on Mouse Joystick
