A new report claims Samsung is planning on introducing a smaller 4.6-inch Galaxy S7 Mini to take on Apple's upcoming 4-inch iPhone SE. The handset will reportedly use specs similar to its older siblings, just like Apple is rumored to include with its latest handset.

Apple is widely expected to announce a smaller 9.7-inch iPad Pro and 4-inch iPhone SE at a press event scheduled for March 21. The company hasn't released a new 4-inch iPhone since it launched the iPhone 5s in 2013 and iPhone fans have been holding out hope for a new 4-inch iPhone ever since Apple made the jump to larger smartphones when it introduced the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

Reports surfaced in early January that Apple was planning on releasing a new 4-inch iPhone in the coming months and most recently, renders of the smartphone were leaked from a third party case maker, which show the handset will likely look very similar to the iPhone 5s but, the iPhone SE will use most of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus' internals, but not its 3D Touch displays.

Samsung has reportedly decided to follow Apple in a similar direction and will unveil a smaller variant of its flagship Galaxy S7 in the form of the Galaxy S7 Mini. The report comes out of Taiwan.

According to the report, Samsung is planning to counter Apple's 4-inch iPhone SE by launching a 4.6-inch Galaxy S7 Mini. Like Apple, Samsung will reportedly pack the Galaxy S7 Mini with similar specs of the flagship Galaxy S7.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Mini will reportedly feature a 4.6-inch 1,280 x 720 Super AMOLED display and use the same Exynos or Snapdragon 820 processors as the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge and 3 GB of RAM. The source claims Samsung will pack in a 12-megapixel rear camera with 3x optical zoom and the same microSD expansion slot, premium metal, glass, and waterproof case found on the S7 and S7 edge.

There's no word on when we can expect to see the Galaxy S7 Mini officially announced, but Samsung has launched spinoff devices off its flagship smartphones in the summer in previous years. We'll be sure to keep you posted on any Galaxy S7 Mini details as they become available.
