After weeks and weeks of speculation, Apple has confirmed one piece of the puzzle pertaining to rumors about the upcoming iPhone 6. 

The company has started sending out invitations for a long-rumored press event set for Sept. 9. The affair, which will take place in Apple's hometown of Cupertino, California, is widely expected to be the unveiling of the company's newest smartphone. 

While a lot of information had already leaked about the event, Apple is doing its best to maintain an air of secrecy about the proceedings. The invitations that the company sent out had just the date of the event and the message "Wish we could say more."

Apple, which has introduced a new iPhone model every year since launching the brand in 2007, has a history of announcing its new smartphones during this time of the year. Since the launch of the 4S on October of 2011, the company has developed a tendency for announcing its new smartphones during the fall. 

For the Sept. 9 event, Apple is expected to launch two variants of the iPhone 6. The two versions of the smartphone are said to have larger screens than the 4-inch display on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. The iPhone 6 is expected to come in two sizes: one with a 4.7-inch screen and another with a 5.5-inch screen. 

Initially, it was rumored that the 4.7-inch iPhone would be launched in a mid-September event. The production for the larger iPhone was said to have been hit with delays, giving rise to rumors that the device would be unveiled in early 2015. Apple was said to have ordered 70 to 80 million units of the smartphone from its suppliers. 

News of a Sept. 9 event confirms an earlier story from Re/code. The report, which cited Apple Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue, described Apple's new product lineup as the best one from the past 25 years. 

Aside from the iPhone 6, the company is also expected to unveil a wrist-worn "iWatch." According to a source, the device, which was initially rumored for a release in October, was promoted to a launch alongside the two variants of the iPhone 6. Not much has been revealed about the device; however, it is expected to make good use of Apple's HealthKit and HomeKit platforms. In October, the company is also expected to launch OS X Yosemite and its new line of Macs and iPads.
