Paramount Pictures confirmed last year that the upcoming “Terminator” reboot, “Terminator: Genisys,” will be the first film in a new trilogy. The studio just announced when we can expect to see those films hit theaters.

On Friday, September 5, Paramount published the trilogy’s schedule. The release date for the first movie had previously been announced, July 1, 2015. The two other films in the pipeline are currently generically titled “Terminator 2” and “Terminator 3,” and the studio says we can expect to see those in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is reprising his role as the iconic T-800 for the upcoming films because, let’s face it, nobody wants to watch a “Terminator” movie without the Terminator. He posted a photo on Instagram in August, showing himself sitting in a director’s chair after “Genisys” shooting wrapped. This photo provided the first real confirmation of the upcoming movie’s correct spelling of “Genisys.” He included the following caption with his photo:

“Hasta la vista, baby. I want to thank the cast and crew of @TerminatorGenisys for a fantastic shoot. It was challenging, it was fun, and it was rewarding. From our director to the producers, from the camera team to catering, from visual effects to hair and makeup - we couldn't have done it without you. I can't wait to see our finished project and I know we'll remind the fans why they fell in love with the Terminator. On July 1, 2015, I'll be back.”

Little is known about the plot of “Terminator: Genisys.” But we do know the film will include Sarah Connor, John Connor and Kyle Reese, in addition to the aging T-800. Jason Clarke (“Zero Dark Thirty”) takes on the role of the leader of the Resistance, John Connor. His mother, Sarah, is played by Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), and Jai Courtney (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”) plays his father, Kyle.

In addition to the upcoming trilogy, “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” writers/producers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have a new “Terminator” television series in development. Screen Rant says this series “will tie into the movie reboot trilogy, much as the Marvel/ABC series ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ occasionally intersects directly with events depicted in Marvel Studios’ film releases (while still exploring independent stories that occur in the same universe).”

Following the July 1, 2015 theatrical release of “Terminator: Genisys,” “Terminator 2” opens on May 19, 2017, and the trilogy’s final film releases on June 29, 2018.
