For a while, it appeared that comic book fans might have been getting a big-screen adaptation of Justice League Dark, a film that would have focused on the supernatural side of the DC Comic universe. It would have featured prominent DC "dark" heroes like Constantine, Zatanna and of course, Swamp Thing.

Though that never came to pass, Joseph Kahn, best known for directing 2004's motorcycle action film Torque, has uploaded an animation reel on Vimeo showing what Swamp Thing might have looked like, had the film moved forward. It was part of Kahn's pitch for the project.

In short: Swamp Thing has never looked better. He's massive and foreboding. Bugs and spores fly around him as he walks, with each step he takes feeling heavy and powerful.

Seeing how great the character could have looked on screen makes it even more depressing that a live-action Justice League Dark film failed to get off the ground. Director Guillermo Del Toro was long attached to the project, but after he stepped away, the idea seemed to fizzle out. Now, it looks like DC and Warner Bros. have instead opted for an animated Justice League Dark film. That will release this fall on Blu-ray, DVD and video-on-demand and will feature actor Matt Ryan reprising his role as John Constantine. You can check out a preview of the film here.

While it's sad that fans likely won't see a big-screen version of Swamp Thing in all his glory anytime soon, there's still plenty to be excited about for fans of the character. In addition to appearing in the Justice League Dark animated film, Swamp Thing is heavily rumored to be a playable character in the upcoming DC Universe fighting game Injustice 2.

Swamp Thing hasn't been confirmed for the title just yet, but a recent poll from developer NetherRealm shows he is one of the most-requested fan characters. He even made our list of characters we would most like to see. Another heavily-requested character, Blue Beetle, was revealed at Comic-Con to be joining the game's roster. That seems to indicate that NetherRealm is definitely listening to fans, so it only seems to be a matter of time before nature's fearsome protector makes his way into the game. Here's hoping he looks every bit as great as he does in this test footage.
