Samsung took the wraps off its much-awaited Android-powered Galaxy Note 7 on Aug. 2, but at the device's launch in Africa the company had a surprise in store — the debut of the Samsung Z2.

Samsung unveiled a pre-release variant of the Tizen-powered smartphone, which is poised to hit the shelves in countries such as India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, as well as Africa. Interestingly, the Samsung Z2 — the successor of the 4-inch Samsung Z1 that was released in January 2015 — is the first Tizen-powered handset that will be released in Africa.

According to a report from Techweez, Samsung is eyeing a release for the Z2 smartphone in three key African markets, namely: Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria. The publication reveals that South Africa will be the first to get the Samsung Z2; however, the release date is not yet known.

The Samsung Z2, however, will debut in Kenya in a few weeks from now, Aug. 26 to be precise, says the publication.

The images of the Samsung Z2 shared by the publication hint at an entry-level handset. Visually, the budget smartphone is quite bulky and sports a metal body. This is a stark contrast to the supposed images of the alleged Samsung Z2 that was leaked online in May 2015.

The Samsung Z2 was also in the news earlier in May this year, when the handset sporting the model number SM-Z200F was spotted on Indian export and import website Zauba. While the listing did not reveal any hardware details of the smartphone, it confirmed that the Samsung Z2 would sport a 4-inch display.

While the hardware details of the Samsung Z2 smartphone are not yet known, the handset sports a 4-inch AMOLED screen and offers dual-SIM support. The handset will also have 1 GB of RAM.

Judging by the specs, the Samsung Z2 will target the low-end segment and will be pitched as an entry-level budget offering in regions that are considered price sensitive.

Rumors have been rife that the Samsung Z2 screen will tout the resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. The handset is also anticipated to house a 32-bit quad-core processor and a 2,000 mAh battery.

The pricing for the smartphone is not yet known, but considering that the company's first-ever Tizen smartphone, Samsung Z1 was priced at about $90, the Samsung Z2 should be in the same price range.

The hands-on image of the smartphone shows off a gold variant of the Z2, whether it will tout additional hues remains to be seen.
