The World of Warcraft game series is decades-old and has evolved into one of the most-beloved fantasy universes of all time. There are comics, books and even a live-action film dedicated to bringing World of Warcraft's Azeroth to life.

With the release of the game's latest expansion, Legion, coming later this month, Blizzard continues to tell new tales in Azeroth in the form of its recently-released "Harbinger" animated shorts. Each of the three videos focuses on an important character in Legion, and helps to set the stage for events to come.

Players who battled their way through World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor are no doubt familiar with Gul'dan, the nefarious orc warlock allied with the demonic Burning Legion. Gul'dan is back and more evil than ever in Legion, and Blizzard's new short shines light on the character's never-before-seen backstory. Forsaken by his clan and the elements, Gul'dan instead embraces the power of the Burning Legion's fel energy, much to the despair of the village Gul'dan was raised in.

If you played Warlords of Draenor, there's also a good chance you remember Khadgar, the powerful human wizard who aids players throughout the expansion in his search for Gul'dan. In the events just prior to Legion, Khadgar is seeking a way to defeat the invading demons once and for all. That leads him to be tempted by his former master, but things aren't exactly as they appear.

Last but not least is Illidan. The iconic Warcraft character has been missing in action since the game's second expansion, but now, he's back and stronger than ever before. He has his own army of fellow Demon Hunters now, which is also World of Warcraft's newest playable class. The short below helps explain the motivations of those like Illidan, who would sacrifice everything for the power to defeat the Burning Legion once and for all.

Each video is beautifully drawn and features Blizzard's signature style. Alongside being some of the most skilled developers in the business, the folks at Blizzard are also master storytellers. They've curated and built upon the Warcraft story for more than two decades, and it doesn't seem like enthusiasm for the franchise will be waning anytime soon thanks to their never-ending efforts.

World of Warcraft: Legion arrives on Aug. 30.
