Makeup lovers often flip through the pages of a beauty magazine or scroll past their Instagram feed to get inspiration for new looks. However, there is no way of trying it out for themselves without first purchasing all the new products and hoping it looks good on.

Yet now, ModiFace, one of the leaders in augmented reality, is allowing users to try on different makeup looks from photos seen in magazines or online with the launch of its new technology for its mobile app.

The ModiFace Live app already allows users to add professional-looking makeup to their live videos. Along with providing users with dozens of different looks, the free photo effects app also allows the user to change their eye color, whiten their teeth and smooth out their skin.

However, the company announced on Tuesday the availability of its new patent tech that makes trying on makeup as seen in photos possible in its app.

Called Live-Scan, the augmented reality technology has been in development for almost a decade. To create the tech, ModiFace analyzed more than 100,000 users' photos where makeup was used to train the recognition system.

As a result, Live-Scan has visualization technology that can separate the skin layer from makeup in a photo. After identifying the actual texture and style of the makeup seen in any given photo, the tech then renders what it detects onto the user's face frame-by-frame in real-time.

This includes anything from matte lipsticks to multi-color eyeshadows and other complex looks.

"Our goal with Live-Scan was to create the ultimate search engine for makeup exploration, and to do so in a way that was a seamless experience for users," Parham Aarabi, Founder and CEO of ModiFace, said in a statement. "Live-Scan constantly scans live video and as soon as there is a face, it is immediately translated into a look that can be tried on. It is easy, quick, and magical."

However, now, users who are obsessed with trying out different makeup looks can simply take a photo of someone they see in real life, a magazine, on a social media app or the TV and apply the look for themselves for their own selfies and videos to be shared with their friends.

Part of the reason why Snapchat users love the filters so much is because they can enhance the beauty qualities of a selfie or add the perfect makeup look, whether the butterfly crown, winged eyeliner look or Bratz doll-like options are used. Just like Snapchat, ModiFace uses augmented reality — and now, its new Live-Scan 3D tech — to enable users to further embrace their creativity when it comes to their makeup looks.

The new feature is now available in the ModiFace Live app for iOS.
