Along with announcing the new Galaxy Note 7 smartphone last week during a press event in New York City, Samsung also unveiled the updated version of its virtual reality headset.

The second-generation Samsung Gear VR now includes a wider, 101-degree field of view, more precise head-tracking technology and an easy-to-use and flatter touchpad with Home and Back buttons.

Powered by Oculus, the Gear VR still requires a Samsung Galaxy smartphone to turn it into a VR device. It also now supports USB-C, which is important since it means it is compatible with the new Note 7.

Despite featuring USB Type-C support, the new Gear VR also features a Mirror USB connector to make it compatible with the Note 5, Galaxy S7, S7 edge, S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+.

The device also has its own USB-C port that can both charge the new Galaxy phone and transfer data.

The device also looks better, sporting a dark blue color instead of being white and blue. It is also said to be much more comfortable than the first-generation Samsung Gear VR, with thicker and softer padding that also blocks out more light for more distraction-free immersion.

The new Samsung Gear VR will launch next Friday, Aug. 19, along with the Galaxy Note 7. Although preorders for the new smartphone began earlier this month, customers looking to get their hands on the virtual reality headset can now do so.

Here's where to preorder the second-generation Gear VR:

Samsung:

The headset is now available for preorder on Samsung's website. The device retails for $99, and is expected to ship in "late August."

The company is known to offer deals like adding another Samsung device to the package when a customer purchases a new smartphone. However, those buying the Note 7 will have the option of getting a GearFit 2 or a 265 GB memory card and not the Gear VR.

Amazon:

Consumers can also preorder the Gear VR on Amazon. Again, it retails for $99, and Prime members get free shipping once the device launches on Aug. 19.

Best Buy:

The headset is available or preorder for $99 at Best Buy, with cardholders getting five percent back in rewards and the ability to save between $5 and $30 on select accessories. The Gear VR is not yet available for store pickup, but is "coming soon."

Mobile carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon also sell the first-generation Gear VR, so there is a good chance the new headset will be available through those retailers as well.
