Virtual reality's primary selling point might be its innovative and almost surreal gameplay experiences, but it isn't exclusively grouped in that department. It can bleed virtually into other fronts where virtual reality technology is greatly an advantage.

For example, Matterport, a huge stockpile of realistic 3D imagery, exclusively of environments and real world places, can be useful for several possibilities for anyone eager to get creative. Matterport is opening up its colossal library containing 250,000 real world spaces to everyone for free.

"Matterport is excited to bring this capability to its thousands of camera owners and to millions of consumers visiting Matterport Spaces. We believe in the power of VR to help us achieve our vision of giving people the power to experience any place at any time," Bill Brown, chief executive of Matterport, said.

The platform is named CoreVR, and it invites everyone to gawk at Matterport's huge reserve. CoreVR essentially turns a host of environments into VR experiences, and now it will allow you to experience 250,000 of them. Every VR space created up until 2016 will be free of charge. However, after 2016 each 3D space converted to VR will cost $19.

Matterport claims that it has the most expansive library of realistic 360-degree VR locations, available for anyone with a Samsung Gear VR or Google Cardboard VR headset to view for free now and in 2017.

But before you subject yourself to the tall order of imagining the endless possibilities of a real-world VR repository, keep in mind it will take some time before anybody can take advantage of Matterport. Think of it as a wellspring of content or "assets" that is open to everyone.

Matterport built all of its spaces using its proprietary Pro 3D camera. Users can purchase this camera for $4,500 to create their own Matterport spaces. After an owner captures the space, it will generate a virtual environment which can then be explored on compatible VR headsets.

CoreVR will be accessible to anyone via the Matterport app for Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR, with support for other platforms in the pipeline. Initially, it will come with 150 real world spaces. The rest of the 250,000 spaces can be viewed on its 3D Showcase app.

Matterport is a media platform company who claims to that its huge library of real world 3D have been experienced by consumers over 75 million times.
