The second episode of Constantine aired a few days ago with the addition of a new character to the series: Zed. We all know everyone should have an idea who John Constantine is, but does anyone know who Zed is? For those who don't, we'll break it down.

In the second episode, Zed becomes a companion of John Constantine due to her abilities of having visions, which she communicates through drawings. She is destined to travel with Constantine as she has been having visions of him for months.

In the comics, Zed has dark hair with white stripes. She's a psychic, and eventually she and Constantine become so close that they get involved in an intimate relationship.

Throughout the 31 issues, Zed provided spiritual assistance to Constantine as they both set out to stop demons and all sorts of creatures from hell. Unfortunately for Zed, her time came to an end in the comics, and not in a good way. A particular story arc called the "Resurrection Crusade" saw the end of Zed, and it also caused Constantine to become a changed man in some ways because he actually loved her.

The "Resurrection Crusade" was led by an occult group, and Zed's father at the time was its leader. The plan was to summon Mary, the mother of Jesus, and place her soul within Zed. However, things took a nasty turn after it was revealed that Zed was not the type of lady the demon needed.

For the ritual to work as intended, Zed would have to be a virgin. Her father thought she was, and for the majority of the 31 issues, she was indeed a virgin. However, the night before the ritual, Zed had sexual relations with Constantine, a move that sealed her fate.

When the group summoned the demon, it realizes that she wasn't a virgin and rejected her. The failed sacrifice caused Zed to lose her life, though, it is not certain if her soul was taken to the underworld.

Interestingly enough, Zed was the only woman to have a long romance with Constantine, so it goes to show that he actually loved her.

It is not clear where the TV show plans to take the character, and whether or not the aim is to follow the comics down to the wire. We'd love that as it is always great to stick to the source material whenever possible.
