When the original Just Cause was released back in 2006, the game was relatively successful - enough to spawn a sequel a number of years later. It wasn't until Just Cause 2 was released that the franchise became a bona fide success: the game was never a massive triple-A blockbuster, but that doesn't mean the game didn't have a huge fanbase.

Square Enix knows that fans want a sequel. A new-gen Just Cause game could be absolutely amazing: an even bigger open world, even more destruction - the possibilities are endless. Really, it was only a matter of time before the publisher announced a sequel, but fans were still worried that the franchise's second entry would also be its last.

Finally, after four long years, Square Enix has pulled back the curtain: as a part of Game Informer's December issue, Just Cause 3 has officially been announced.

Avalanche Studios will return as stewards of the franchise for the new-gen Just Cause 3. Several series staples will see their return, such as the parachute and grappling hook. These tools aren't just being copied over from Just Cause 2, though: both gadgets have received new physics systems, making them more useful and fun to play with than ever. Players will also strap on a wingsuit, which makes its series debut and aids the player in crossing terrain more quickly (the parachute always was somewhat sluggish).

Rico, the protagonist from both Just Cause and its sequel, will also have a starring role in Just Cause 3. The Asian island of Panau has been swapped out for a fictional Mediterranean archipelago, so expect more than simple jungles, deserts and cities in Just Cause 3.

Otherwise, details are still scarce on the latest entry in the franchise. Square Enix has confirmed that Just Cause 3 will launch sometime in 2015 on new-generation hardware, and it can be assumed that everything about the game will be bigger. Considering the immensity of the map in Just Cause 2, players should expect to get lost in Just Cause 3...perhaps literally!
