Amidst the growing list of food recalls in recent months, McCain Foods is adding to the list as they voluntarily recall a few hash brown products from the shelves. The products in question were recalled due to contamination with golf ball pieces.

Accidental Golf Ball Contamination

As of April 21, McCain Foods is voluntarily removing two of their hash brown products from the shelves due to the possibility of them having extraneous golf ball materials. The recall affects two products in particular: Harris Teeter 2 lb. Bag of Frozen Southern Style Hash Browns, and Roundy's 2 lb. Bag of Frozen Southern Style Hash Browns.

The manufacturers state that despite their strict manufacturing procedures, the contamination may have occurred as a result of inadvertently harvesting the golf balls along with the potatoes used in making the products, and that consumption of the contaminated batch may result in mouth injuries or present choking hazards.

The specific batch of hash browns affected by the recall was produced on Jan 19 of this year, with a product code of B170119 inked at the back of the packs. Any other products from the brand or packs without the said product code are not affected by the recall.

Though no injuries have been reported from the golf ball contamination, the FDA urges anyone who has purchased the said products with the specific batch number to throw away the product or return them to the place of purchase.

The Roundy's hash browns were distributed in stores in Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Harris Teeter products were distributed in various stores around South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Georgia, and Florida.
