It's that time of year again: every TV show on the air is gearing up for their annual Christmas specials. Of course, in the case of The Simpsons, the show is famous for another holiday special - its 'Treehouse of Horror' Halloween specials. These episodes are some of the best and most influential in the series' history. So much so that, in the past, the show's Halloween special usually trumps its yuletide offerings.

For what it's worth, Fox seems adamant about changing that, and is putting everything it can behind The Simpsons' upcoming special. The first shot in the salvo is the show's holiday-themed opening...and honestly, it's pretty amazing:

At first, it may seem pretty typical. There's nothing outrageous like the Guillermo del Toro opening from Halloween, but as is usual with The Simpsons, the devil is in the details: jokes about Greek Orthodox Christmas, questions about what reindeer meat tastes like and a subtle reference to the stop-motion days of yore are great - plus, the 'Obligatory Frozen Reference' is just perfect.

The Simpsons airs Sunday nights at 8pm on Fox.
