A Chinese food delivery driver in New York is blaming Waze for his attempt to go through the Lincoln Tunnel. The driver was stopped by police, he blamed the Waze app for sending him on the route that forced him to go onto the bridge.
If successful, the man would've ended up in New Jersey.
Bruce Lee Gets Caught
A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey which oversees bridges, tunnels, airports, and seaports in both states, says that the 19-year-old man, Bruce Lee, tried to use his bike to go into the Lincoln Tunnel. The Lincoln Tunnel connects Manhattan to New Jersey.
After he was arrested Lee said that the reason that he tried to take the tunnel was that of the directions given to him by the Waze app. Lee was arrested on charges of trespass and criminal possession of a weapon. Police found Lee had a dagger with him.
This isn't the first time that a man tried to drive his bicycle through a tunnel meant for cars in New York City. Another delivery driver tried to take the Holland Tunnel, and he also blamed technology for causing him to take the route.
Taking the directions can be a waste of time or get people into trouble with law enforcement. Situations like sending a man on a bike can be hilarious. In a case of life imitating art, just like in an episode of The Office, a person drove into a lake.
In January, a driver in Vermont drove into Lake Champlain. The driver said that the Waze app directed him to drive into the lake. He said that before he realized what was happening his car was already on the lake.
While the last two stories have been funny, there have also been tragic consequences for following directions from the Waze. A tourist couple in Brazil saw could happen when someone follows the wrong directions. They were led to a dangerous street with the same name as a popular tourist avenue in the city of Niteroi.
Once they made their way down the street in the car, someone opened fire causing 20 bullets to hit the car. The wife was killed, while the husband managed to drive the car away to safety.
Google has help page dedicated to helping users report wrong directions by Waze.
