LG Electronics announced the opening of a new Software Upgrade Center at its headquarters in South Korea on Thursday, April 12.

Software Upgrade Center To Help Push Updates Quickly

The multinational conglomerate announced that the new facility will make sure LG users receive faster and timelier software updates for their smartphones.

The Software Upgrade Center will not only focus on pushing OS updates for LG smartphones but will also roll out updates from time to time to continuously test the stability and compatibility of the hardware and software of the devices.

The updates will be rolled out to users in countries where LG smartphones are available to ensure that consumers across the globe receive the same level of quality service.

One of the main objectives of LG's new Software Upgrade Center is to release the Android Oreo update for users of its flagship G6 device later this month, and users in Korea will be the first to receive it.

"Stable and consistent upgrades will demonstrate to our customers that LG smartphones have long and reliable lifespans," LG Electronics CEO Jo Seong-jin said in a statement.

LG's Delayed Software Updates And Software Issues

Let's be honest: software updates aren't exactly one of LG's strengths. This has been exemplified by the fact that last year's G6 still does not have the Android Oreo update, and LG's V30, which launched on Nougat in September, just received the Oreo update on some carriers late last month.

Therefore, LG isn't the first company that comes to consumers' minds when they think of fast software updates, but the new Software Upgrade Center could change that.

LG has also faced criticism over software reliability over time and has somewhat of a reputation for selling phones with manufacturing defects. The company has also come under scrutiny for making phones that eventually become unstable or get stuck in a loop of reboots — an issue that has become known as a bootloop.

LG's G7 ThinQ To Be Unveiled Next Month

The announcement comes ahead of the May 2 launch of LG's G7 ThinQ, marking the second time the company has incorporated its AI technology under its sub-brand ThinQ in its smartphones.

The new flagship device, which is rumored to have an edge-to-edge display and a notch design similar to the iPhone X, will see the return of the LCD display, which LG had ditched for OLED displays in previous models.
