John Legend just achieved iconic EGOT status. He completed the acronym when he won in the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

EGOT refers to the biggest awards in the entertainment industry namely the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. The widely acclaimed musician joined the topnotch group of achievers along with lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Weber.

Impressive Win

The 39-year old musician completed his EGOT status for winning the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. Furthermore, Legend is the first African-American man to be a part of the prestigious EGOT winners.

The singer made history when he portrayed Jesus in NBC's version of the 1970-concept album, which turned into a Broadway musical. Legend is also nominated for Emmy's most outstanding actor in a limited series or movie.

"Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories," said the singer in an Instagram post.

Notably, Legend has won 10 Grammys. Last year, he received a Tony for Best Revival Of a Play for Jitney where he served as the co-producer. In 2015, he won an Oscar for his song "Glory" which became a soundtrack for the film Selma.

Iconic EGOT Status

Other artists who were also vying for EGOT status were Justin Paul and Benj Pasek. However, the two missed their shot this year when they lost in the Original Song category for the TV version of A Christmas Story.

"I never dreamed that I would be here, winning an Emmy, and being in that rare group of people that have won all four of these major [awards]," said Legend in an interview.

Legend's wife, Chrissy Teigen also shared how proud she was for Legend on her social media when she tweeted her husband's photo with Rice and Webber, who won an Oscar in 1996 for Evita, in addition to many Tony and Grammy awards.

The supermodel and author also posted a red carpet photo of her and Legend on Instagram. According to Legend, his wife even moved her schedule with Lip Sync Battle to see him win the award.

Hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be showed live in NBC on Sept. 17. The famous awards show will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

There are 14 other people who have gained EGOT status so far. Other entertainers who have reached the historic milestone are Scott Rudin, Robert Lopez, Mel Brooks, Audrey Hepburn, and Whoopi Goldberg.
