A Japanese Super Mario Maker 2 player was able to create a first-person dungeon crawler level using tools available in the game.

"3D Maze House" is an adventure level developed by Mario Maker user Negitendo. It cleverly combines the game's forced perspective tools with layouts to recreate the look and feel of classic RPGs such as Phantasy Star and The Bard's Tale.

First-Person Perspective

Much like many of the other entries in the Super Mario universe, Nintendo's Super Mario Maker 2 was designed primarily as an action platformer. It doesn't have any editing tools that would normally allow users to add a first-person view to custom levels.

Negitendo was able to solve this by using the game's design suite to place forced perspective elements in 3D Maze House's levels. This gives the illusion that players are traveling through hallways in dungeons such as those seen in 16-bit video games in the 90s.

The level is presented using two windows. The main window occupies much of the game screen and shows what Mario is seeing, while the secondary window located at the bottom-right corner shows how players can traverse through the level. There is also a simple mini-map that helps players know if they're on the right track or not.

The creator also added other elements, such as basic puzzles and enemy encounters, to help spice up the game a bit. Players need to solve certain scenarios to get coins in hard-to-reach areas.

The main goal in 3D Maze House is to guide Mario through a haunted mansion to retrieve three red coins. Sounds easy? It might not seem much at first, but the game's unique orientation is sure to give some fans not familiar with first-person dungeon crawlers quite a challenge.

A Hellish 'Super Mario Maker 2' Level

The Mario Maker series has allowed gamers to use their creative juices to develop unique and wacky platformers. While some levels can be considered harmless fun, others are just downright sadistic ala the Dark Souls series.

Take for instance this Super Mario Maker 2 level designed by user YTSunny. The game ditches the typical enemies, such as Koopa Troopas and Goombas, but it more than makes up for it with dozens of fire bars usually seen in Bowser's castle. Players won't be able to progress even an inch in the game without encountering several of these pillars of death.

A Twitch streamer by the name of Cliffy is just one of a handful of players who were able to conquer the level.
