The Battle of the Consoles

A few months ago, Microsoft revealed Xbox Series X, which was previously named 'Xbox Project Scarlett', saying that it is the company's fastest and most powerful console ever developed and created. This has opened a lot of discussion on their definition of "power" in the oncoming next generation of consoles.

In the previous generations, defining 'power' was ruled by graphics innovation. It started from 8-bit to 16-bit graphics, moved on to 2D, 3D, SD, HD and in the present time, 4K. Not to mention gamers today, have high demand in games that run at 60 frames per second, including precise and responsive input. Microsoft's response to that is the Xbox Series X.

As for Sony's Playstation 5, players have been hyped up to know more about this next-generation console and what it brings to the table when it comes to gaming.

Sony has been proud to unveil all the juicy details behind the hardware and technical components that will make the PS5 a more innovative and powerful platform. This will allow developers to try and max out their creativity when it comes to creating new worlds and gameplay in future titles that they will be designing.

Playstation 5 versus Xbox Series X (Specifications)

Sony recently unveiled the Playstation 5 specs and it seems that when compared to the Xbox Series X, Sony has chosen an entirely different CPU, GPU and SSD speeds.

PERFORMANCE

It really does not matter whether you go for the PS5 or the Series X because all you are getting are massive upgrades to the ones before them.

General breakdown to this is that Series X is far too powerful with the CPU cores clocked in at 3.8 GHz with having simultaneous multithreading or SMT compared to PS5's 3.5 GHz.

STORAGE

Both of these consoles will be using Solid State Drives or SSD. Playstation 5 should improve when it comes to their loading times compared to the old PS4. The same goes for Series X and Xbox One.

Again, the Xbox Series X will be taking the win on this one since they will be sporting 1TB storage as compared to Playstation 5's 825GB which is hardly enough when you have games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that have massive game update sizes. Though, Sony will be enabling PS5 users to expand storage with NVMe PC drives.

CONTROLLER

The Playstation 5 already gave the public eye a first look at their controller, though it is still unclear if Sony will be calling it the DualShock 5 or probably something else. The only changes this controller has is it switched to a USB-C charging port, bigger triggers and have removed the light bar.

On the other hand, the Xbox Series X will be introducing a different and newer version of their controllers. It is a little bit smaller than the previous one, it has a hybrid four-way and eight-way directional pad, and a share button.

Players can still use old Xbox One controllers on the Series X and vice versa.

ONLINE SERVICE

None of these companies have announced anything regarding online multiplayer and how this will work on their next-gen consoles, but the key difference to this is that there will be cloud game streaming, just like Google Stadia that launched in November 2019.

BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY and PLAYABLE GAMES AT LAUNCH

Both of these next-gen consoles will have support on backwards compatibility. Series X will be supporting games that came from the original Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Xbox at launch. While Sony's are a little bit limited as to what games it will be supporting especially having PSVR.

As for the playable games withing launching, Playstation 5 will definitely be having a "big one" from Bluepoint Games, which is the studio that was behind the Uncharted series and Shadow of the Colossus remasters. Plus, Gearbox's Godfall which is set to release holiday 2020.

Though one thing is for sure, everyone is just waiting to see what the Playstation 5 looks actually looks like. Though there have been different images that were leaking online, Sony continues to keep the design a secret.

How various game developers will respond and look at both these next-gen consoles and the power they hold will be a key factor in the future.
