It is the first series that the anime had committed so fully to one particular story, making it one of the franchise's biggest undertakings. The third season is also one of the most successful stories currently.

Since Alicization serves as the anime's finale for its overall series, it brought out all sorts of emotions with the fans until its final moments, especially the War of the Underworld's final episode.

It introduced many questions about the series after showing the Kirito, Alice, and Asuna's last moments. It also teased that Kirito could come back since he was looking backward and opening the door to the "future" with the words "Kirito Will Return," which was also revealed in the original light novels, making it special.

A Twitter user under the name of @Black_IDKirito posted the comparison between the manga and the anime. However, Kirito's return is not a continuation of the mainline Sword Art Online. Instead, he will be in SAO's new anime adaptation called Sword Art Online: Progressive, which is written by Kawahara.
