The PlayStation 5's very unconventional design has actually proven to be a little bit divisive. While it is definitely quite a sight to see, the enormous size as well as the default vertical orientation might have actually turned off a few PlayStation fans according to an article by Slashgear.

Like it always has, the lone console will come in just one default color which without caution, automatically looks like an opportunity for the third-party customization market. This, however, might not really be possible if Sony decides to unleash its legal hounds on any other third-party attempts as it actually just did with a particular company that wanted to make certain customized faceplates for the said PS5.

Sony and Microsoft's technique

Both Sony and Microsoft usually manufacture the bulk of their consoles in a simple design but they are also known to release special editions which they charge huyer than the original console. These special editions usually use different colors or designs which could be in conflict if third-party customizers were to offer these products.

There is no limit to what different third-party companies that specialize in offering customization options can do but a particular seller literally tried to take everything to a whole new level and somehow received a rather strange response from the PlayStation company Sony itself.

Sony warned about legal action to those third-party companies

The website known as CustomizeMyPlates.com had already changed its name reportedly from PlateStation5.com just after Sony had pointed out a number of trademark infringements. That, however, was just the beginning of all of the legal actions that Sony had against them.

They were then allegedly approached by Sony's lawyers and were then warned about the actual formal legal actions that they would receive should they decide to continue and sell the customized faceplates and also continue to distribute their own custom faceplates anywhere within any country, according to Video Games Chronicle.

Sony's patent is actually still pending

Sony's own legal team has apparently considered the PS5 faceplate design as included in the company's own intellectual property. This means that nobody is legally allowed to manufacture these faceplates without Sony's official go signal and blessing. This was the case despite the said patents for the upcoming faceplates still pending on approval according to the argument of the seller.

Another early teardown of the console actually revealed that the said faceplates were very easy to remove and put on the PlayStation 5 which opened the doors to opportunistic third-party companies trying to create unofficial faceplates. As for when Sony plans to release its official variety of PlayStation 5 designs, there is still no information that it will even happen any time soon.
