Sony Electronics has just launched a pair of new Crystal LED Modular direct view displays just prior to the virtual Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2021. It aims at providing solutions for virtual production, an area that has received heightened interest in the production and media industry after various projects such as the Mandalorian was released.

The Mandalorian, a Lucasfilm utilized a production technique using a technology called StageCraft, which became a revolutionary virtual production solution. According to The Verge, the technology used for the Mandalorian uses gigantic screens with photorealistic environments that allowed production teams to create sets that resembled realistic locations and shoot it in camera. The same technology allowed the movie team to film even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sony Crystal LED Specifications

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony releases Crystal LED C-series and B-series, that allow different users with potentially specific needs. The latter is engineered specifically for film production

Each of the two display series are powered by Sony's ZRD-2 Crystal LED display with "ultrafine LED elements.". In addition, both of the Crystal LED C and B series are available in different sizes that suit different needs. They can be used for all occasions and are made up of "scalable, flexible configurations."

Sonly highlights that their Crystal LED displays can be suitable for many purposes. It can be used in corporate presentation, in movie and television media production, as well s having visitor information in displays. Sony also released a demo video that shows the many ways that their versatile product can work with many users.

Both of the B and C series are powered by Sony's "X1 for Crystal LED" processor and utilize the same Crystal LED technology that allowed its Bravia TVs to function optimally. Both of the products boast the capacity to display high dynamic range images and stereoscopic 3D as well as the feature of having high frame rates up to 120 frames per second. Moreover, they are ideal for any situations that require focus and attention as they do not possess fans, which results to an anti-noise operation.

The difference between the two series is that C-series can be great for uses that need to accentuate high contrast ratio. On the other hand, the B-Series can be used for setups that require high brightness. In addition Sony adds that the B series was developed in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment that are reflective of the environment that the B series can be used. It can be a great use for fil production because of its features such as anti-reflection coating sealed with a matte finish, which is definitely ideal for highly virtual and realistic sets.

Product Release Date and Price

Sony's new Crystal LED C and B series are planned to be launched and made available to the market anytime in June. Pricing hasn't been announced yet by Sony.

Sony's virtual production environment using the new Crystal LED technology is now currently being used at Sony's Digital Media Production Center, a venture for filmmakers based in Los Angeles, California.
