For some reason, Nvidia never opted to release a 16GB video memory version of the previous generation GeForce RTX 2070. espite the fact that schematics suggest it is possible to release a 16GB version of it, Nvidia stuck with the 8GB video memory. To prove that this is true, one user took matters in his own hands and modded the 8GB GeForce RTX 2070 to double the video memory into 16GB.

Youtuber Upgrades 8GB of GDDR6 memory to 16GB

As reported by PC Gamer, Youtube uploader named "VIC-on" was that one brave soul who was generous enough to take footage of his own experience. In his Youtube channel, he uploaded the video of him attempting to double the memory of the delicate device. The video has since then garnered 108,000 views and counting. Take a look at the video below.

The card arrived with a memory of 8GB GDDR6 and was manufactured by Micron. However, the GeForce RTX 2070 also says that it can support up to 1GB and 2GB of GDDR6 memory chips from Samsung. Thus, user VIC-on figured that the card could be improved. With that information, he bought eight pieces of Samsung 2GB GDDR6 memory chips on Aliexpress, where he paid over $200.

At first glance, it can be pricey. However, it seems that his move is a more practical upgrade. It does not compare to the level of upgrading the RAM in a laptop or desktop, however, it's a huge accomplishment. The user VIC-on opted not to pluck the modules. Instead, he used a heat gun in order to loosen the memory chips that surround the GPU. Afterwards he plucked them out with a pair of tweezers.

He then looked for resistors at the back of the printed circuit board. Afterwards, he started installing his newly brought 2GB Samsung chips using a soldering iron. He put these chips into place and enabled his PC with the newly installed "modified" card.

Newly Modded GeForce RTX 2070 Messes Up with BIOS

According to Tom's Hardware, the process went into Windows seamlessly. When the user checks the GPU-Z status, the utility reads a 16GB Samsung GDDR6 memory, which is a success. It was smooth sailing from there. Unfortunately, things didn't seem so well afterwards.

When testing the card with a utility called FurMark in stressing graphic cards, it run well. However, when the user exited, the PC crashed and went into black screen. Although according to the user, it may happen even with gameplay any any other heavy loads.

After troubleshooting the issue, user VIC-on speculates that the issue is the BIOS. The card messes up because the BIOS frequency and voltage does not match with the newly installed modified card.

Regardless, huge props still to the user for doubling the video memory of the GeForce RTX 2070, which Nvidia did not do. Even the newer GeForce RTX 3070 only houses 8GB of memory. User VIC-on targets on modding the newer device as well.
