During an interview with USA Today, Will.i.am stated that his idea for the high-tech mask started from attempting to solve problems that come with regular mask wearing, like eyeglasses fogging up as people wear one or having the voice muffled while talking or while on a phone call.

Will.i.am stated that what he saw in public was that people had loose-fitted masks, and that they had earbuds.

He said that when people got phone calls, they need to take the mask off and the earbuds would fall on the floor, then the mask would fall on the floor too, making the mask dirty and unusable.

Xupermask features

The Xupermask includes a custom head strap to help the mask fit your face perfectly. It also has three dual speed fans to provide air circulation inside the mask and it has replaceable filters that users can swap out every 30 days.

The mask is equipped with HEPA or high-efficiency particulate air and it features a magnetic earbud docking system and microphone with noise reduction technology. It also has LED lights.

The high-tech masks boasts of up to seven hours of battery life on a single charge. The replaceable filters for the Xupermask will be available in a 3-pack and it will cost around $27.99, as noted by People.

John Waldron, the president and CEO of Safety and Product Solutions at Honeywell, stated that when they were confronted with this idea of partnering with a world-renowned innovator to solve a very specific consumer issue around having a great performing and fashionable mask that you could use for the whole day, the product was an obvious fit.

The fans of Black Eyed Peas may have seen the Xupermask before. Will.i.am is spotted wearing it in group's music video for the song "Girl Like Me" featuring singer Shakira.

Will.i.am stated that he originally planned to make a couple hundred Xupermasks for his close friends before he got in touch with Honeywell to produce more and to distribute them nationwide.

The musician stated that when it comes to tech investing, he focuses on the potential solution it might provide.

Will.i.am said that he had been early on some things and he was keen on investing on products, but now he wants to make sure that the products that he advertises and sells will solve a problem.
