In an attempt to extort an unknown amount of money straight out of the official D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, hackers who were with the Babuk ransomware gang shockingly leaked a huge amount of data on five of the department's own officers. The data, which was then published on the gang's own dark website, are very extensive and include chunks of information.

The data published on the gang's reported dark web site was said to be quite extensive, and it even includes individual dossiers of every single officer that have actually been marked "confidential" and also reach a whopping 100 pages long, according to NBC News. The dossiers include very confidential information.

The reach of this hack does not only limit itself to the current officers in service but also those that are former employees as well.
According to Gizmodo, the files are actually part of a much larger 250GB-ish cache that was reportedly stolen from the PD's servers just about some time during the past few weeks. The huge stack of data could even potentially include intelligence regarding D.C.'s local gang activity.
Stolen Data Could Include Police Informants
Data that could have been compromised might have included how the agency responded to the recent Jan 6, Capital riot, and a lot of other actions. The hackers now threaten to publish the rest of the information if their demands are not met by the department.
Babuk, which is a relatively new cybercriminal gang, has reportedly played quite an increasingly aggressive game along with the police department throughout the last several days while posting taunting messages on its personal website. The cybercriminals are even threatening to "out" the information on certain police informants if they are not paid the ransom they demand.

Gang Demands Ransom
The group openly stated that they advise the whole police station to get in touch with them as soon as they can since the information that they have could be very compromising, and if it were released, a lot of people could suffer. The gang even advertised screenshots of the data they had stolen and previewed them on its dark web site.
April 28, however, was when the gang had officially leaked some data to show the police they are not bluffing. Babuk had already given the law enforcement agency a narrow period of just three days for them to respond to the demands. Just shortly after the leak on Wednesday, the page then referring to the actual MPD disappeared from Babuk's online website. No official comment has been given from the MPD regarding the situation.
