LONDON, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 07: In this photo illustration, The Twitter logo is displayed on a mobile device as the company announced it's initial public offering and debut on the New York Stock Exchange on November 7, 2013 in London, England. Twitter went public on the NYSE opening at USD 26 per share, valuing the company's worth at an estimated USD 18 billion.

Open To All Again

The verification process was first opened to all users in July 2016. And now, the process has changed, and the blue check rewarding is starting again.

In hindsight, the program launched in 2009 to avoid the poser or impersonating accounts to proliferate on Twitter. But it took years before the public had the chance to prove that they worthy of verification too.

Since 2017, as the program was halted, only Twitter had control over who to verify. It even fast-tracked it for the health experts as the pandemic has taken over the world.

It is only now that Twitter is getting back at it again -- with a revamped guidelines.

How To Get Verified

The application is open to all, but there's a specific criteria that needs to met to get that blue check.

According to The Verge, the account should fall under six specific types of categories. Users should also fall under these particular characteristics: authentic, notable, and active to be granted the verification.

If you fall under these categories, you may have a better chance of getting that blue check:

  • Government
  • Sports and gaming
  • Entertainment
  • Companies, brands, and organizations
  • News organizations and journalist
  • Activist, organizers, and other influential individuals

People vying for verification also need to follow Twitter's rules on banning and violence. And the company will be strict about these criteria.

Twitter, as reported by NBC, considered doing otherwise, allowing anyone to be verified. However, with that, the risk of giving blue checks to inauthentic accounts will be high.

The said categories will also be expanded to more fields of expertise, Twitter said. It will soon include academics, religious leaders, and even scientists.

Twitter said in its announcement that users may enter the verification process through the Account Settings in the weeks to come. The company did not announce a specific date yet.

After users have submitted their application, it would be reviewed by a team that Twitter has hired. Yes, humans will be behind the process -- not algorithms, Twitter revealed to a briefing with journalists, via The Verge.

After the review, users should expect "a few days" for a response.
