Japan Display Inc., a former LCD partner of Cupertino giant Apple, is now shifting its way to the business. The company will continue to compete with OLED screens with the intervention of virtual reality (VR) in the undertaking.

Known for its display products in the past, the Japanese LCD expert will be eyeing to be a pioneer of VR technology in the context of its specialized business. It added that what it would do would be cheaper and better than the standard OLED.

Even though this won't catch mobile users on a big scale, this could be a difference-maker in the world of virtual reality.

Japan Display is Moving to Compete with OLED in VR

As we know, VR has been widely used to discover more important technologies primarily in the field of gaming. However, while the community encourages to utilize it more often, the results are not that satisfying in some cases. To step up, Facebook for example decided to create Oculus Quest 2 in 2020 to give entertainment to COVID-19 struck population who stays at home.

In 2016, organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) screens were introduced in the headsets. They are the same releases that most modern phones use nowadays. The mobile makers often prioritize the technology to provide the best gaming experience for the users.

Besides Facebook, HTC is also showing its dominance in LCD production. Last year, experts said that the technology will persist in the next five years, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, June 16.

Takeshi Harayama, the VR chief of JDI said that they have been dealing with difficulties in searching for a VR headset manufacturer who does not have ties with them.

There is a reason why the makers of OLED do not want to be involved in the competition even on a smaller scale. The only thing that they could get is a complete obstacle that could emerge along the way--in terms of million sales over the past years.

However, PS5 maker Sony is also laying out its plans to pursue OLED for the console's VR goggles. Previously, the specialized wearables were released in hopes of gaining more attention from the fans. Each year, gamers have been questioning its improvements which the company could not fully implement.

Japan Display Should Keep Two Things in its Mind

Truly, diving into the VR environment is not as easy as it sounds. Besides the costly service that should be rendered to create a flawless virtual reality program, the quality might not be at par with the expected characteristics.

VR goggles, for instance, need a more optimized display compared to the screens of smartphones. Having said that, JDI aims to develop a 1,200-pixel display that could be a top-notch screen in the future, as Yoshihiro Watanabe the chief VR headset engineer stated.

"I'm confident our technology on LCDs is at least two years ahead of others in the category," Watanabe added.

Apple's involvement in the success of JDI started years ago. Toshiba and Hitachi, and Sony have been the faithful collaborators at that time in terms of LCD production. However, the biggest part remains in the Cupertino titan, which later left an unforgettable mark on Japan Display when it switched to OLED, Japan Times reported.

Most likely, we could see that virtual reality will be enveloped inside the regular LCD that we know. Perhaps, this could dictate the competition with OLED which is currently sailing in mobile giants like Samsung and Huawei.
